Fiumicino handles 90 percent of Rome's international arrivals, yet no direct rail link runs to the Amalfi Coast. Travelers arriving at FCO face a choice: board a direct coach that skips Naples entirely, or take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini and piece together regional trains south through Napoli Centrale to Salerno or Sorrento. The coach is slower but simpler. The train is faster on paper but vulnerable to delays, strikes and the crush of Naples commuter traffic. Ciampino, Rome's secondary airport serving low-cost carriers, adds an extra transfer layer. Shuttle buses connect Ciampino to Termini in 40 minutes, where onward trains or coaches depart for Campania. Budget carriers often land late at night, which narrows departure windows and can force an overnight in Rome. Private transfers eliminate transfers and timetable anxiety. A sedan or minivan meets you at arrivals, handles luggage and delivers you to your hotel entrance in Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. The route follows the A1 autostrada to Naples, then cuts east on the A3 before joining the SS163 coastal highway. Journey time is predictable—3.5 to 4 hours barring accidents—but the service costs ten times a bus ticket. Rental cars grant maximum freedom but demand skill. The SS163 is a two-lane ribbon carved into vertical cliffs, with hairpin turns, no shoulder and tour buses squeezing past oncoming Fiats. Parking in coastal towns is scarce and expensive. First-time drivers often underestimate the stress. If you rent, consider dropping the car in Sorrento or Salerno and using ferries and local buses for the coastal stretch.
